Miami Marlins — as of April 21, 2017

2017/04/23

Up:

Kyle Barraclough, RP: April 21 – Kyle Barraclough could be taking over the Setup role from Brad Ziegler or, at the very least, sharing those duties. Both of them have 3 Holds to date.

Down:

Miguel Rojas, 3B, SS: April 21 – Miguel Rojas started 7 games at SS during Adeiny Hechavarria’s 10-day stint on the DL but, with Hechavarria back in the lineup, he should see his playing time diminish significantly in the future.

Derek Dietrich, 3B: April 17 – With the return of Martin Prado from the DL, Derek Dietrich will move back to his originally-slated role of utility IF.

Martin Prado, 3B: April 21 – Having been out of action for most of the first three weeks of the season, it should come as no surprise that Martin Prado has not seen a lot of playing time at 3B. In fact, he’s only started 3 of the Marlins’ 16 games.

However, that should change significantly in the next few weeks as he re-asserts his role as the primary Marlin at the hot corner.

Adeiny Hechavarria, SS: April 21 – Having missed 10 days with a left oblique strain, Adeiny Hechavarria’s share of playing time at SS has declined significantly. To date, he’s started only 6 of the Marlins’ 16 games, with Miguel Rojas starting 7 and J.T. Riddle 3. Things should get back to normal quickly, though, and Riddle has been sent back to the minors.

Brad Ziegler, RP: April 21 – Brad Ziegler could be dropping a bit of the Setup responsibilities to Kyle Barraclough. Both have 3 Holds to date.

Ichiro Suzuki, OF: April 21 – As the fourth OF, Ichiro Suzuki has not seen much action to date. He’s started only 4 of the Marlins’ 16 games.

In:

Martin Prado, 3B: Apr 17 – 3:43 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins activated 3B Martin Prado from the 10-day disabled list.

Prado, who began the year on the DL with a right hamstring strain, went 3-for-9 (.333) with three walks during a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter. Derek Dietrich will slide into a utility role now that Prado is back to full health and Tyler Moore will head for the minors.

Apr 11 – 3:33 PM (Rotoworld) — Martin Prado (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A Jupiter.

Prado was forced to begin the season on the disabled list after straining his right hamstring during the World Baseball Classic. If all goes well over the next few days, he could be activated as soon as this weekend. Derek Dietrich will continue to fill in at the hot corner for now.

Apr 2 – 11:46 AM (Rotoworld) — Marlins placed 3B Martin Prado on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with a strained right hamstring.

Prado suffered the injury a couple weeks ago during the World Baseball Classic. There’s no timetable for his return but he should be back before the end of April. Derek Dietrich will fill in at 3B in the meantime.

Mar 19 – 8:17 AM (Rotoworld) — Martin Prado will not be ready for Opening Day after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.

In addition to the strained hammy, Prado is also dealing with some discomfort in his right calf. The infielder suffered the injuries last Wednesday, March 15, during a World Baseball Classic matchup against the United States. While the news could have been worse, Prado will need a stint on the disabled list to start the season. Derek Dietrich will fill in for him at 3B.

Mar 15 – 11:21 PM (Rotoworld) — Martin Prado left today’s World Baseball Classic game between the United States and Venezuela due to a right hamstring injury.

Prado suffered the hamstring injury in the middle innings of the contest. With just two weeks remaining until the start of the regular season, this is inopportune timing, to say the least. There is no current timetable for his return to action but that should be clarified in the next few days. Given the notorious nature of hamstring injuries, his availability for Opening Day could be in danger. Should he miss time in the regular season, Derek Dietrich could see expanded playing time.

Adeiny Hechavarria, SS: Apr 20 – 6:12 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins activated SS Adeiny Hechavarria from the 10-day disabled list.

Hechavarria is back after missing time with a strained oblique. J.T. Riddle has been optioned to Triple-A New Orleans in the corresponding roster move.

Apr 18 – 6:48 PM (Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp/Rotoworld) — Adeiny Hechavarria (oblique) has joined Double-A Jacksonville for a rehab assignment.

Hechavarria should be ready to rejoin the Marlins this weekend if he can avoid setbacks. The shortstop landed on the 10-day disabled list April 9 with a left oblique strain.

Apr 9 – 2:06 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins placed SS Adeiny Hechavarria on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

It’s unclear when Hechavarria was injured but oblique injuries typically sideline players for more than the minimum stay on the DL. J.T. Riddle has been recalled to take his roster spot and he figures to share shortstop with Miguel Rojas for a few weeks.

Jarlin García, RP: Apr 14 – 11:28 AM (Rotoworld) — Marlins recalled LHP Jarlin Garcia from Double-A Jacksonville.

The Marlins need a fresh relief arm after yesterday’s 16-inning game versus the Mets. Garcia, 24, was called up to the majors last season but didn’t make an appearance. He’ll be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.

Matt Wittgren was sent to the minors in a corresponding move.

Out:

Jeff Locke, SP, RP: Apr 2 – 11:45 AM (Rotoworld) — Marlins placed LHP Jeff Locke on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 30, with left biceps tendinitis.

Locke missed all of spring training with the injury. He’s on a throwing program but there’s no timetable for his return.

Mar 10 – 10:13 AM (Rotoworld) — Marlins manager Don Mattingly indicated today that Jeff Locke (biceps) will begin the season on the disabled list.

Locke has been dealing with biceps tendinitis for nearly three weeks and, although he’s resumed throwing, he’s just not going to have enough time to get ready in time for the opener. The LHP was shooting for a spot in the starting rotation but he may have ended up in a long relief role even if he was healthy.

Mar 6 – 4:59 PM (South Florida Sun-Sentinel/Rotoworld) —  Jeff Locke (biceps) played catch on both Saturday, March 4, and today.

It went off without a hitch and it sounds like Locke will probably resume throwing from a mound soon. “We’re hoping we’re over the hump and on a progression now,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. Locke looks to be trending in the right direction now but he would still appear to be a question mark for Opening Day.

Feb 25 – 11:50 AM (MLB.com/Rotoworld) — Jeff Locke had an MRI yesterday and it revealed no structural damage.

While that’s encouraging news, the LHP will be shut down from throwing for the next seven days. The more time that he misses this spring, the harder his chances will be of securing a spot in the club’s Opening Day rotation.

Feb 23 – 5:18 PM (Marlins.mlb.com/Rotoworld) —  Jeff Locke (biceps) threw 15-20 light tosses from 60 feet today.

It was Locke’s first time throwing since encountering biceps tendinitis over the weekend. Locke said he feels “a lot better” but still isn’t 100 percent. It’s unclear when he’ll resume mound work or begin facing live hitters.

Feb 20 – 9:53 AM (Rotoworld) — Jeff Locke has been shut down for a few days due to biceps tendinitis.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said it’s not a big concern and Locke should resume throwing sometime this week. The LHP is competing for a spot in the season-opening starting rotation.

Tyler Moore, 1B, OF: Apr 21 – 5:54 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins sent 1B/OF Tyler Moore outright to Triple-A New Orleans.

Moore had been designated for assignment but he cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. He’ll represent depth.

Apr 17 – 3:46 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins designated 1B/OF Tyler Moore for assignment.

The move clears the way for Martin Prado’s return from the disabled list. Moore, who made the Opening Day roster out of spring training, was 4-for-11 (.364) with a double to begin the year.

J.T. Riddle, SS: Apr 20 – 6:16 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins optioned SS J.T. Riddle to Triple-A New Orleans.

Riddle spent a little over a week in the majors while Adeiny Hechavarria was out with an oblique strain. He’s no longer needed with Hechavarria back at full strength.

Apr 9 – 2:08 PM (Rotoworld) — Marlins recalled SS J.T. Riddle from Triple-A New Orleans.

Ranked by MLB.com as the team’s No. 12 prospect, Riddle batted .276/.326/.366 with four homers between Double- and Triple-A in 2016 before being added to the 40-man roster over the winter. He should share starts at shortstop with Miguel Rojas while Adeiny Hechavarria (oblique) is sidelined and will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game.

Nick Wittgren, RP: Apr 14 – 8:21 AM (Rotoworld) — Marlins optioned RHP Nick Wittgren to Triple-A New Orleans.

Wittgren threw three shutout innings in yesterday’s marathon loss to the Mets, so the club needs to get a fresh arm added to the bullpen. Jarlin Garcia has been called up to take his place in the bullpen.
